The ancient Carian capital sits 16 km from the terminal and is the closest town to the airport — and the least visited part of the region.
Why Milas
Known in antiquity as Mylasa, Milas was the capital of the Carian kingdom and the seat of King Mausolus — the ruler for whom the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was built at Bodrum. The town keeps traces of the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Menteşe and Ottoman periods, one on top of another.
At 16 km from Milas-Bodrum Airport, roughly twenty minutes by road, it is the closest settlement to the terminal. That makes it a sensible base for an early departure or a very late arrival, and accommodation costs considerably less than on the coast. It also deserves a couple of days in its own right: five significant ancient cities lie within 40 km.

One of the largest open-air markets in the Aegean, held every Tuesday. Vegetables, olive oil, honey, spices, local cheeses, carpets and handicrafts — genuinely local rather than touristic. Go early.

Hand-woven for centuries and known for their geometric patterns and natural dyes. Each one takes months of work. The carpet market and the workshops sell the real thing.

Historic buildings
The Roman Gümüşkesen — a two-storey monumental tomb — plus the Firuz Bey Mosque of 1394, the Ulu Mosque, the Ottoman bazaar and the old Milas houses. All walkable in an afternoon.

Walking and birdwatching
The ancient road up to Labraunda is a fine trek. Lake Bafa nature park is the birdwatching site, and the Latmos mountains hide rock paintings and caves.

Practicalities
Getting there. Milas is 19 km from the airport, about twenty minutes by taxi or hire car. Dolmuş minibuses also run from Bodrum bus station, and intercity coaches heading for Muğla pass through the town.
How long to stay. One day covers the town centre; two or three days is right if you want all the ancient cities without rushing. Many visitors fold it into a Bodrum holiday as an inland excursion on a change-over day.
When to come. Spring, April and May, and autumn, September and October, are ideal for the sites — summer is punishing on open ground with no shade. Winter is mild but wet. Whenever you come, try to be there on a Tuesday for the market.
